    About Similan Islands

The Similan Islands, located in the Andaman Sea northwest of Phuket, are one of Thailand’s most famous marine national parks. Known for crystal-clear water, bright white sand, granite boulders, and world-class snorkelling and diving, the Similans attract travellers looking for vibrant coral reefs and some of the best underwater visibility in the country.

While Simba Sea Trips does not operate tours to the Similan Islands, we provide this information to help guests understand the full range of marine destinations in southern Thailand and choose the right trip for their plans.

How to Get to the Similan Islands

The Similans are best accessed from Khao Lak, which is the closest mainland point to the islands. From Khao Lak, high-speed boats take approximately 60–90 minutes to reach the national park. Most travellers stay one night in Khao Lak or book a morning transfer from Phuket before joining a tour.

Tours typically operate November to April, as the marine park is closed during the monsoon season for safety and reef protection.

What You Can See at the Similan Islands

The Similans are considered one of the top snorkelling and diving areas in Thailand due to their clear water, healthy coral, and large marine species. Common sightings include:

    • parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish

    • giant trevally and schools of fusiliers

    • blue-spotted rays and cuttlefish

    • green and hawksbill sea turtles

    • occasional reef sharks

    • dramatic granite boulder reefs creating tunnels and swim-throughs

The islands above water are just as striking, with smooth granite formations, bright white beaches, and panoramic viewpoints like the famous Sail Rock at Similan Island No. 8.

Simba Sea Trips & the Similan Islands

Although Simba Sea Trips focuses on the Phi Phi Islands, Phang Nga Bay, Krabi, and the local islands near Phuket, we recognise that some travellers may be planning a longer stay in southern Thailand and want to explore beyond our routes.

If you’re looking for the clearest water and the best coral visibility near Phuket, the Similan Islands — accessed from Khao Lak — are an excellent option to pair with a Simba tour on a different day.

Simba Sea Trips does not operate tours here, but we encourage guests to depart from Khao Lak for the fastest access.

    Awesome day out

We had a fantastic day tour with excellent communication and friendly, professional staff. The trip was well-organised, with a light breakfast, fresh fruit and drinks, and a delicious Thai lunch on a remote island. Highlights included a unique cave tour, relaxing canoeing, photo stops at James Bond Island, refreshing swims, and time on a deserted beach. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience with our small group of eight and highly recommend this company.

Horrible felt rushed paid alot for nothing

I was disappointed in this trip. I went last year and this tour was amazing. Moe was guide last year she was just fun and just full of life. This year I brought my mom thinking it would be the same. The prices went up from last year. The tour felt rushed, we didnt go to all the islands, the guides didnt take pictures of the families or friends, it was just not exciting at all. The mood just felt somber. They rush you when your eating lunch because your grab is there. Just the whole things was a mess and thr group was alot bigger this year. It was a waste of money.
